That's not an egg!

That's not an egg, it's a gold kiwi! I think they've been in the markets around Toronto for quite some time now, but I've been uncharacteristically slow to pick-up on this new food trend. I don't often buy kiwis since Paul's allergy to them gives him an itchy mouth. But, I think I'll change that habit. These are a nice mellow fruit with a soft flesh, and much less tangy than green kiwis. Plus, they're fun to eat as little vegan eggs in a cup!

I keep checking the grocery store for them, but no luck. Get with it Illinois, I want a golden kiwi!

I remember a few years ago, they were handing these out as samples at Loblaws with these funky little lime green plastic spoons with teeth (like a fork/spoon I guess). Anyway, wrapped around the utensil was a pamphlet (which I kept) with very interesting info on the golden kiwi. I have to say I was enlightened regarding the awesome nutritional power packed in those sweet and tangy fuzzy little packages: Twice as much vitamin C as oranges. As much potassium as bananas (with much fewer calories). A source of vitamin E (unusual for a low-fat food), folic acid, and lutein (good for your eyes). Huge anti-oxidant properties. Anti-coagulant properties (particularly significant for those with high blood pressure or a predisposition to heart disease) - and the list goes on and on. It's a superfood! And, they're delicious. I haven't seen them around lately - I'm in the GTA so I'll keep my eyes peeled.

Very nice photo, by the by :)

Hey! I just moved back to Toronto after a 5-year hiatus (YAYAYAYAY). Never really checked out the markets except for the cheap chinatown veggies. Could you recommend some good produce markets? thanks! -Maureen

I've never tried golden kiwis, but I love regular kiwis, so I'm sure I'd love them! I'll keep an eye out for them.

I LOVE GOLD KIWI!!!

And, as an aside, green kiwi used to make my mouth itch, just like Paul, but gold kiwi never have! I don't want Paul to get sick, but he might be able to eat the gold ones??

Haha adorable! I love kiwi - but I get the itchy mouth thing too :-( Sometimes I just suck it up and deal with the weird feeling because they're so good.
