Veggie food in Nfld, b'y!

There's not much by way of veggie food in Newfoundland, that's for sure. But, Paul's mother always trys to accommodate me whenever I visit. This time she made a lovely roasted vegetable dish with portobellos, tomatoes, carrots, yams, tofu and a basil vinaigrette. She was really sweet to welcome me with such a nice photo-worthy dish.

Paul's 87 year old grandmother made her very first vegetarian dish for me as well...I wish I would have got a picture of it. It was a curried vegetable pie. I know vegetarianism is so foreign to these ladies, and change is not easy (especially when you're 87), so I think it's so sweet of them to go to all this effort.
While I was on vacation in St John's, Ewa was on the west coast of Canada and the US. She brought back all sorts of goodies for me! I think I'm most excited about the Sheese because I've wanted to try this product for a long time and its not available in Canada. So far I've tried the Blue Sheese and its fantastic all by itself. Imagine eating vegan cheeze by itself, not semi-melted or masked by other flavours...unheard of! I'm so excited. Looks like I'll be placing expensive orders with Food Fight once this supply runs out....this stuff costs over 9 USD each! Ugh...but I forgot, they don't ship to Canada anymore:-(

I'm also really excited about the Lightlife sausage and tempeh bacon since we can no longer get them in Canada. There is nothing even remotely comparable in our markets!Last night I was happy to be back in my own kitchen again and made a baked burrito inspired by the dish Paul had at St John's only veggie restaurant called The Sprout. It was filled with chipolte spiced black beans and roasted yams and topped with a guacamole sauce. The sauce was inspired by a French cooking show where they always make lovely sauces to top their mostly meat-based dishes. Normally I don't like avocado sauces cause they are filled with mayo, but this one was made with all the usual guacamole ingredients and I simply used water to thin it out...perfect!Today's lunch with Blue Sheese.....I can' t wait!

Gosh, I never really thought about not being able to get veggie products in Canada that are available in the US. Big bummer. I bet y'all have some nice products that we can't get. Just don't tell me what I'm missing. I don't need more food envy.

I guess it is very hard to be a vegan in Newfoundland...

It is really nice that your host whipped up wonderful vegan dishes!

Great idea with the avocado sauce. I was just thinking the other day about making something similar and thining it out with soy milk. Glad to know it would work.

I'm so excited to hear about your blue cheese. That was Marty's favorite cheese before becoming vegan and he often comments on how much he misses it. Although, for $9 a carton, I think he's going to have to keep on missing it.

They sell Sheese at The Big Carrot on Danforth!

I'm glad you got to try sheese... I still haven't been able to talk myself out of the $9 and try it. But I do look forward to the day... Although I have to say, blue cheese has always been one thing I could do without!!!

I too am intrigued by the Sheese (and I'm not even veg!).

Love the burrito too, and the green sauce looks almost other-worldly.

That burrito is huge! Is it wrapped in a flour tortilla? That cool avocado sauce sounds perfect for a spicy burrito.

That's so nice of his mother and grandmother to cook for you! People don't have to try very hard to please me- that vegetable roast that you describe sound perfect!

Oooh, and Sheese... I miss blue cheese so much, the idea that this is a good version of it makes me want to get a second job so I can afford it- ha ha!

I too never really thought about the lack of availability of some US veg-products in Canada, and vice versa.

I'm looking forward to the verdict on the blue "cheese"!!

oh and that's so great that Paul's grandmother made you a vegan feast!! how lovely!!

Well, you got to the Sprout in
St. John's! Right on, b'y! :)

Our last trip (last summer) we were there just about every 2nd day... yes, eating veg in Newfie is not the easiest. We used to like the pad thai dish at the Sprout. They never had that guacamole sauce on their burrito when we visited, maybe they've jazzed up their menu more. Oh, and I know you have Vive, so take a look at the Creamy Avocado Cashew Sauce, p. 46 - might be something along the same lines.

How sweet that Paul's mom and grandma made some veggie dishes for you - that is darling.

But just imagine, if you weren't a veg, you could have tried the cod tongues!

HI There
I was just wondering where you are located at? I am the nutritional consultant at Petes Frootique in Halifax, I order a lot of products for my clients with special diets and or allergies. Recently I have started selling Sheese. It retails for 7.49 CAD at my store. I don't know if you are close by or not, but I just thought I would pass that along.
Cheers!
