A woman examines square watermelons before shipment in Zentsuji, Japan. (Globe and Mail Online)
Have you ever seen such a thing? Do you think they are genetically modified to grow this way, or do they grow them inside containers that force them into this shape? However they do it, it's wild stuff! I'm sure it makes it easier to transport them!

that is crazy!!
that looks crazy!!
Wow that is so weird! I've never heard of square watermelons before...
I remember reading an article about the square watermelons a while back - I believe they're grown in glass boxes or something, to keep the shape. so bizarre, haha.
Next thing you know... strawberry flavoured watermelons!
Very strange indeed!
Your barley & chickpeas below looks delicious.
I'd heard about them, but never seen a picture! My guess is that they're still GMO, even if they are grown in a "shaped" box....
They're grown in forms to get them that shape. Melons are a common hostess gift in Japan - and very, very expensive.
it's about $85 each. watermelons in japan are way redder and sweeter, but i don't want to pay that much for a piece of fruits...
That is crazy! Cool though...
Wow! And of course there is a Web site that lets you "find out how" (for a price, of course!) at the ever-popular
www.mysquarewatermelon.com
Those look soooo weird! They are so perfectly square that they have to be grown in something square!
Wow Weird!
I have seen that on TV years ago, funny that they are still sold! It's so weird
Oh, before I forget: Your last post inspired me to finally go and get me some barley:)
Whoa!
Woah, for a second, I thought you'd found square watermelons in toronto and I said, that's it, I'm packing my bags and moving to toronto! These watermelons are wild and I'm pretty sure they're grown in containers (and cost, like, $50 each). They're not GMO.
Weird looking. What a cool present as long as they are not GMO. But the price! OUCH!!
These watermelons are for decoration purposes only and are grown in square containers. They ship them out un-ripe and are given as store-front customer attracting tools to supermarkets and department stores. The ones we eat are round. Not square. There are also triangular watermelons too!
There's a video of the square watermelons here

So many ills in the world and people find the time & energy to figure out how to grow square watermelons...
