My mother and her partner came over for dinner tonight, which gave me another excuse to bake a cake! This time I tried a mehndi inspired one. I have always loved the way India brides stain their hands with henna in the most beautiful patterns. My cake turned out looking more like a snowflake then a mehndi design, but hey...I'm an amateur! Next time I'll try for something a little more intricate.
The cake is just a chocolate cake covered with ganache and piped with butter cream frosting. I was so shaky piping the butter cream that I had to pause mid-way for a glass of wine!

Wow, it's pretty! Great idea.
is very pretty!
It looks great!!
That's just too pretty to cut!
Megan, this is is just soooo gorgeous! I can't believe you did that all by hand. Impressive work :-) And I bet it was tasty, too!
Megan, that's beautiful! I am also intrigued by the mehndi art and I think you did a fine job.
LOL - I would have needed the wine too!
Absoutely stunning. Wow!
Oh Megan!
That's so beautiful. Snowflake or mehndi... it all looks good to me! I know what you mean about your hand getting shaky. Doing precision frosting is hard on the hands!
piping is alway's easier with a glass of wine to help. BEAUTIFUL cake design! I love mehndi.

Megan,
I see you have cooked with yuba skin before. Can you explain the easiest way to use it and provide some ideas?
Thanks!!
The cake is just beautiful Megan! What a great idea! I love that you had to stop for a glass of wine to get rid of the shakes. I guess that's OK for baking, not so great for a surgeon! LOL!
wow megan, you are such an artist! your cake looks so pretty!
I was an Indian bride once, and the mehndi was sooo much fun. Your cake looks absolutely lovely.
And I wanted to SINCERELY thank you for recommending King's Cafe. I've read about it so many times on your blog, but never had the chance to actually try it until this weekend. It rocked! The little store at the back was wonderful - I bought some dumplings and buns. And it's only a 10-minute walk from my place! Woo hoo!
Thanks everyone. I'll tell ya...it's wasn't too pretty to cut into!
anonymous - yuba! I love to use it in place of spring roll wrappers. So, I make chinese inspired fillings with mushrooms/rice/onions/garlic/ginger etc. and then wrap it in yuba, and bake it until crispy. I much prefer to use the fresh yuba to the dried yuba. It's 100 times easier to work with!
Sonya - wow, you had mehndi painted hands. That must have been so incredible. I just love the sight of mehndi painted hands. I think they are the most beautiful things! Glad you found Kings Cafe.....the little grocery store is so much fun!
Oh so beautiful! You're the queen of cakes!
Fantastic!!
I can't believe you did that by hand! You should quite your current job and become a cake decorator....I would buy one from you!
Try white background with brownish green mehendi accent. will make it stand out more. also try paisleys :-) But just beautiful to look at!!
