Classic case of: You don't know what you have until you loose it! A few years ago I lived in Toronto's Little India, but do you think I ever shopped there? No! I guess I wasn't a foodie back then. Now that I live on the other side of the City, I wish I could wander through their shops all the time. Figures. We took a little trip this weekend and stocked up on some fun stuff. I picked up a huge tin of Lalah's curry power, which as it would appear from their website, must be good:
"Winners of Spices Board awards for outstanding performance in Export of Curry Powder for 1987-88, 1988-89, 1989-90, 1990-91, 1991-92, 1992-93, 1993-94, 1994-95, 1995-96, 1996-97, 1997-98, 1998-99, 1999-00, 2001-2002,2002-03" I didn't even know there was a Spice Board!
I also picked up some tandoori powder, butter chicken spice blend (nice, these aren't always vegan), and some poppadums. Gotta love the packaging - what's with the crazy rabbit?
There is a veggie restaurant in Little India called Udupi Palace that everyone raves about. I wish I would have brought at least one of those fans with me because then they could have told me what to order. I got a dosa (huge crepe) filled with a potato and onion curry. While it was very good, I had hoped for more interesting things to dip the dosa in. I'm sure it was just a case of not understanding the menu and not knowing what to order. Next time I'm just going to point at someone else's table and say "give me what she's having".
I don't often make TVP chucks because I usually find them bland. This time I stewed the TVP in a tomato and chipotle pepper sauce for nearly 2 hours just to ensure they took on the full flavour of the sauce. We just ate them straight up, but next time I'm going to incorporate them into something else....I don't know what yet, but something. These were certainly not bland!
And finally, a sad little picture, but a good little meal. These were puff pastry cups filled with a mixture of black beans, roasted red peppers, onions and more smoky chipotle sauce. I loved'em!

I love Southern Indian food and their dosas. Do try it again with someone who can help you. If the menu is spectacular, they'll have 5-10 different dosas you can order. My favorite is the Mysore Masala dosa, which has potatoes (standard), ginger, chilies, and other spices. Yum!
i love dosa's. i also love rabbits..but not that crazy looking one. that is a nightmare!
JENNA
the crazy rabbit is teh best part of the poppadums. I bet it wouldn't even sell with out it!
your TVP chunks are making me hung-ray! I never find them around here but have memories of them being rather bland, too. I'm glad you found a way to un-bland-erize them!
Wow, hilarious, i just ate a whole bag of Poppadums from whole foods yesterday. There we no rabbits involved, but a rather tasty mango chutney flavor with lots of spice. I didn't even know they came in cans!
I'm not a chipotle person, but i find that adding some liquid smoke does the trick for me. YUMALICIOUS!
Next time you're heading to Little India give me a head's up, I live down the street and would love to show you some favourite food and novelty things. Most of all, it would be great to finally meet - or we could go for a run along the bike path!
I'm with you on never knowing how to use the TVP chunks. I have half a package left in the pantry, just waiting for me to find a creative use for them. The chipotle tomato sauce sounds like a pretty good idea.
Little India? How fun. Love that crazy wabbit.
One year ago today, Omniman and I were in India, vsiting hte Taj Mahal. So funny I happened upon your blog entry tonite.
Oh Megan - I *love* toronto's Udupi palace! I have a real spice kick, so I love their chili pakoras (never found them anywhere else) and their Utthapam options are tantalizing too.
If you're not into spice, S. Indian food will leave you wanting more. But while you're shopping in little India in Toronto, visit the spice shop a few blocks West of Udupi and ask for "Kala Namak" - it's Indian Black Salt and it will help you make faux-eggs!
No kidding!!
(trust me)
